My favorite childhood memories took place during the summer. I remember feeling so relaxed, happy and free. School was out and we could play all day, catch fireflies at night, swim, eat tons of delicious food at bbq’s and just enjoy each day.
So what is summer like for an adult? Well, let’s just say it’s not quite so carefree. We still need to pay the bills, clean the house and do all of the things. Kids are home from school complaining of boredom and we are just wishing we could teleport back to our childhood and spend even one day in their shoes. Instead, I try to spend quality time with them whenever possible and turn to my essential oils to keep us comfortable and calm throughout the summer.
Here are my top 5 summer survival essential oils.
#1- Peppermint
This oil helps to cool down your body which is no-brainer during these hot summer months. I carry a pre-diluted roller in my bag and roll a little on the back of my neck or wrists when things are really heating up. You can also make a spritzer by adding 15 drops of peppermint to a 1 oz glass spray bottle filled with water or fractionated coconut oil. Be sure to avoid your eyes!
#2- Digestzen
Summer often means family parties, travel and delicious food and drinks. This digestive blend is nothing short of magical. Reach for it when you’ve overindulged or have eaten something that isn’t settling so well. You’ll also want to have it on hand during road trips, boat trips, etc so you’re prepared when anyone starts to feel queasy (it’s great for motion sickness.)
#3- Lavender
Lavender is everything calming. This will be your go-to when you’ve had too much sun and are starting to resemble a lobster. Dilute with coconut oil and spread over the affected area for quick soothing relief. It’s also great to soothe itchy skin (think mosquito bites).
#4- Terrashield
Last August, we moved from California to Texas and it’s true what they say. Everything is bigger in Texas ( including the mosquito population)! My kids grab this natural bug repellant spray before going out to play in the evening. It has a nice smell and terrashield can also be added to a diffuser on your porch. It comes in a convenient pre-diluted spray bottle for topical use or a 15ml bottle for use in the diffuser or topically (be sure to dilute this one before using topically)
#5- Peace
You’re going to want to carry a peace roller bottle wherever you go. Trust me. School is out which means siblings need to figure out how to co-exist in the same room and breathe the same air. Any parent knows they can’t do that for long. Whip it out and roll on the back of their little necks (and your own) when you feel like you’re going to lose it.
I recommend applying a little of your favorite calming oil to your wrists and then bring your wrists to your face. Close your eyes and take deep breaths while counting to 20. Think about your favorite childhood summer memory. When you open your eyes, I promise you will feel calmer and ready to take on the blissful summer day.
